A+ Featured Student Amanda Rabin

Amanda Rabin approaches new challenges with enthusiasm and flexibility. From searching for the right tutors to taking the SAT, Amanda was able to adapt and persevere to eventually achieve success. A+ recently spoke with this Council Rock High School North junior about her A+ Test Prep experience. A+: What brought you and your family to A+? AMANDA: Extensive researching on the internet led us to A+. After a few phone calls, we decided that A+ would be a good fit. According to Rob Gelb, Amanda’s math tutor, she hit the ground running. â€Å"Amanda was very open-minded with tutoring, and she was willing to try whatever strategies I threw at her. Once she gets something, she runs with it, and that was apparent from the beginning.† A+: What was your biggest challenge? AMANDA: Because I did my tutoring in the summer, remaining focused was a big challenge for me. Amanda didn’t let her hectic summer derail her preparation, however. Indeed, as her verbal tutor, Christine Sweger, attests â€Å"Amanda's success is a credit to her hard work and positive attitude. She had a busy summer, balancing work and other commitments, but she always did her homework and was focused during our sessions.† A+: What were some of the factors that helped you achieve your goal or made the process a good one for you? AMANDA: Both of my tutors, Christine and Rob, helped me to remain on track with studying. They showed me that subjects like English and Math can be very interesting depending on how you chose to learn the material. A+: What was the best piece of advice you remember getting from your tutor? AMANDA: There is no point in stressing yourself out during the test; that won’t solve anything. So, instead of letting test prep intimidate her, Amanda was able to stay calm and be creative with the process. â€Å"You wouldn't necessarily think preparing for a standardized test could be fun, but that's what it was like helping Amanda get ready for the SAT,† says Christine. â€Å"Amanda was always open to trying out new strategies and had a positive attitude while reviewing the questions she missed on practice tests.† Rob adds: â€Å"Amanda works often from the right side of her brain, or rather the creative side. Applying that side of her thinking, in other words, working with her strengths, gave her the chance to shine. It shows that any student can succeed on the SAT as long as they are honest with how they approach things and really persist. It doesn’t have to be a slog, and Amanda proved that to me every session we had.† A+: So, what’s next for you? What are your future goals? AMANDA: I’m interested in biology and genetics. The University of Sciences is a possibility, although I’m not completely decided about colleges yet. A+: What advice do you have for students just starting the standardized testing process? AMANDA: Instead of worrying about the test, spend your energy studying and making sure you’re confident in your ability to succeed.
